Young people invited to join free theatre project to celebrate the history of St Anne’s.

YOUNG volunteers are being invited to join a theatre project that will delve back through the centuries at St Anne’s in Barnstaple.

Throughout February and March, Multi Story Theatre Company will be working with a group of local young people to create a new play about the multi layered history of the building, now call St Anne’s Community Arts Centre.

The group will meet every Monday for eight weeks from 6–7.30pm, starting on February 4 and the project will conclude with a live performance in the building in late March.

“We are thrilled to be leading this exciting project, we have lots of ideas and have been researching the Huguenots who used St Anne’s as a secret chapel as a starting point,” commented Bill Buffery and Gill Nathanson of Multi Story, well known in North Devon and beyond for their drama productions and work with young people.

“We look forward to working with a group of young people from Barnstaple - and everyone is welcome to join in, even if drama isn’t your favourite subject at school.”

There is plenty of history to work with at St Anne’s. The chapel is thought to have been constructed in the 14th century and in the 17th century became the town grammar school, right up until 1910.

A vivid reminder of these schooldays was brought to light when small paper dart aeroplanes created by bygone students were discovered during the recent restoration work.

The drama initiative has been commissioned as part of the three year Heritage Lottery project being managed by Barnstaple Town Council.

Any young person aged 11 to 14 years is welcome to join the project and it is free to take part, although spaces are limited. Register your interest by emailing or call 01271 373311.
