6:30 PM
The Russian choral group, Blagovest, is making a very welcome return to Colyton for a concert on the evening of Saturday, May 26, at 7.30pm.
The group of five singers, all of whom trained at The St Petersburg Conservatoire, perform a repertoire that contrasts the sublime and intensely spiritual music of the Russian Orthodox Church, with the humour and high spirits of traditional Russian folk tunes.
Blagovest, which translates as ‘good news’, is the name given to the ringing of a single bell that is the call to prayer before a service in the Russian Orthodox Church.
It is appropriate that this talented and unusual unaccompanied ensemble are singing in St Andrew’s Church, in Colyton.
Proceeds from the concert will go to The Friends of St Andrew’s, a charity dedicated to the preservation and maintenance of the fabric of this beautiful building.
Tickets, which include interval refreshments, are £9 (£4.50 for under-eighteens) and are available from Haynes, Market Square, Colyton, or can be reserved by telephoning 01297 553163.
There is a discount of £1 per ticket for members of The Friends.
