Lewis Schaffer, the star of the longest-running solo comedy show in London, is coming to Exmouth.

Lewis Schaffer is ‘Free Until Famous’. The London-based New York comic is testing the concept of the Edinburgh Free Festival in a mini-tour of the best venues in Britain.

Lewis is a comedy pioneer in the tradition of the covered wagon folk who colonised America. The Guardian loves his “rapid-fire delivery... everything is fair game.” Time Out New York raves he has “a unique style - he can insult you and love you in the same sentence” and Time Out in London attests he’s “controversial, unpredictable and recommended”.

Why a free tour? Lewis Schaffer has been asked. “I’m doing this free show until I become famous. This is my 20th year. Famous comics don’t need to try a free tour; and bad comics couldn’t pull it off, if it can be pulled off at all.

“It’s disturbing for people to give me money before they know what they’re getting. Every show I do is so different because even I don’t know what I’ll be doing. Just because my show has been recommended or because I wear a suit or come from New York doesn’t mean you’ll like what I do. If you do, then give me what you think I’m worth. And what businesses get paid in advance? Okay most get the money first… but still…”

“Lee Mack actually suggested I take my show on tour. I know, you don’t think Lee Mack knows me but he does! I am not saying he likes me, but he knows me.”

Saturday, March 9, at the Exmouth Pavilion.
