There was no success on the field for Barnstaple Town at the weekend as they lost their important bottom-of-the-table clash at home to Radstock Town 2-0.

But off the field there is encouragement, with seven applicants for the club’s managerial post.

Chairman Warren Crossley said he would be speaking to them during the week and hoped to have something to announce by the middle of next week.

“We have two or three locals and others from Taunton, Exeter and Plymouth, including a couple of ex-professionals, “ he said.

“There seem to be some quite keen people ready to take the job on.”

Saturday’s match saw striker Luke Evans, previously with Cardiff Corinthians, make a promising debut for Town, including twice hitting the crossbar.

Left midfielder Liam Gregory, newly signed. from Tiverton also made his debut.

But the game just did not go Town’s way as they were beaten by a goal in each half and now lie six points adrift at the bottom of the table.

The visitors opened the scoring after just 12 minutes.

Town came back well, but efforts by both Ross Jones and Danny Jenkins both failed to beat visiting keeper Chris Wright.

And when Jenkins did manage to deceive the keeper in the second half the woodwork intervened.

Radstock struck again in the final five minutes.

Barnstaple are away this Saturday to sixth-placed Gillingham Town.

Combe hold leaders

Ilfracombe town fought out a deserved 0-0 away draw with current league leaders Cadbury Heath.

Combe started shakily. After a 10 minute spell of getting to grips with the opposition they started to find their rhythm and were unlucky not to take the lead from a corner.

James Mayne rose highest in the box to smash his header against the bar and it was cleared for another corner. Ross Middleton swung in the resulting kick and hit the bar again, this time directly from the corner kick.

Combe were looking far more likely throughout the first half, Billy Tucker was twisting and turning on the right wing and when he cut back inside the box a flailing defenders leg clipped his heels. But he showed great honesty to stay on his feet and get his shot away.

Combe were defending up the hill and knew Cadbury would put them under pressure.

But the tight defence of Karl Baggaley, Gary Skinner and Craig Allan was marshalled superbly by James Mayne and with Steve Oliver sweeping up anything that came in his 18 yard box Cadbury struggled to create any clear cut chances in the first half.

The second half was much of the same, both teams tried to pass the ball quickly and attack at speed, but both defences were holding firm. Combe now attacking down the hill looked for the breakthrough.

The game always looked like one goal could win it and Combe thought they had found it midway through the second half when Lee Francis put in a corner which was met by the head of Edd Yeo, only to be disallowed for an infrigement in the box.

Other chances fell to Yeo and Jon Vooght and Combe had another good penalty shout waved away for handball in the box.

‘That is probably the proudest I’ve been of the squad so far this season,’” said manager Middleton. “Cadbury Heath are a very good side, they are flying in the league and have been scoring goals left, right and centre, but we out worked them, out played them and at times bullied them in their own back yard.”

Combe are on the road again on Saturday to Odd Down in Bath.
