Three members of the Riverside Judo Club took part in the British Judo Council Closed National Competition – and one returned as a national champion.
Building on a busy period of competition, Mark Wild, 10, used this experience to take the title in the 10 to 12 years age group. Mark had won gold in Plymouth at the beginning of the month and a bronze in Southampton the following week. He was also fighting in his third national competition of the year, having missed out in the spring and won bronze at the Welsh Nationals.
Taking part in his first national competition, Simon Sevcik, nine, fought in the eight to nine years under 40kg section. Having won gold the previous weekend at Southampton, he was looking forward to the challenge of a national event and did not disappoint. Simon won through to the final and took the silver medal, denied the gold by a more experienced opponent.
Clubmate Chris Rayner, fighting in the 4th and 3rd Kyu pool at under 70kg, was also taking part in his first national competition and won one of his three fights with a superb hold down.
Riverside Judo Club will be adding a fourth junior judo session to its busy schedule for 2013 starting at Umberleigh Village Hall on January 10.
