Amongst the Exmouth Harriers membership Dave Stone is, without a doubt, Mr Marathon, and, like all sportsmen and women eventually do he has learned to counter-balance some of the losses of age with the gains of experience, writes Dave Eveleigh.

This year rather than train harder he has trained more thoughtfully and at the Cornish Marathon, held around Bodmin Moor last weekend he improved his best time for the course, as he had done at the Discovery Ultra on Dartmoor.

Good times are very important to runners, but a race is a race though, and Dave was frustrated to have just missed out on the Bronze medal position at this one, losing, after 26 miles, by just 50-metres in an all-out final battle to the line.

He had to settle for third spot in a time of 2:51:42, but he did pick up the award for top man age 40-44.
