Two mixed friendlies have survived the weather this week both being played in glorious sunshine, with the only cancellation being local team Paignton on Thursday when the greens were closed due to the deluge, writes Jenny Smith.
On Tuesday there was a fixture against a touring team from Hay-on-Wye who were staying in Torquay.
The result was close in every way with four winning rinks for Madeira, three draws and three losses and an overall win for Madeira of 182 shots to 180.
Of Madeira’s winning rinks, the most impressive shot difference of plus 18 was on the rink skipped by John Bellamy with Kate Andrews, Graham Clarkson and Millie Powell.
On Sunday, Ardagh came for the day and did well winning on seven of the 10 rinks and by an overall score of 204 shots to Madeira’s 175 with one team from Ardagh achieving a hot shot!
Of Madeira’s three winning rinks, the best shot difference of plus eight which was achieved by the team skipped by Sandra Mott and including Chris Fox, Dorothy Lowe and Keith Ewins.
It was a busy week for the Men’s representative teams. They played a round of the Foxlands against Seaton on Monday.
Madeira won both the home rink and the away rink by two shots each and are now through to the semi-final of Section 3.
This was due to be played on Thursday against Feniton but was scuppered by the rain and has now been rescheduled for tomorrow (Friday, June 29).
On Tuesday they played a round of the County Trophy against Ottery St Mary.
Madeira won both the home rinks, the highlight being a 33-7 win by Bill Davies and his team of Terry Reardon, Mike Orchard and David Macaulay to help Madeira win 14 points to Ottery St Mary’s two.
The week concluded with a heavy defeat in the Devon Top Club against Honiton.
