Kingsbridge 2, SOHC Ladies’ 2nds 1
After a long-awaited win last weekend, the ladies’ 2nds were upbeat as they set off for an away match against Kingsbridge, determined to turn the tables, redressing their previous 7-2 defeat early on in the season, writes by Annie Clay.
It was an early start in sub-zero conditions but this did not dampen the ladies’ spirits.
The game started well with the whole team linking together, defending early attacks from a confident Kingsbridge team.
SOHC’s defence remained strong and, to Kingsbridge’s surprise and disappointment, they stopped a number of shots at goal, depriving the opposition of an early lead.
SOCH’s impenetrable defence fed the ball back up the field, with Emma, Maisie and Rachel linking well to create goal scoring chances.
From one of these moves forward, SOCH were awarded a short corner. The Kingsbridge goalie did well to clear a shot from Karen and then kicked away a second attempt. Fortunately, Annabelle Clay was well placed on the post and, with perfect timing, tapped in the rebound to give SOCH a 1-0 lead.
By the end of the first half, Kingsbridge had managed to return two goals despite the defence and midfield working their socks off to make it as hard as possible for them.
Half time came and went and the SOHC ladies knew the opposition would maintain their pressure but came out fighting. Keeping much of the possession, the SOHC Ladies gave Kingsbridge a run for their money. Midfield played well, linking the defence and the forwards, giving SOHC numerous shots on goal. Unfortunately, none of these found the back of the net and the final score remained 2-1. Despite their defeat, the ladies were delighted with the way the team had worked together and this score line, against strong opposition, shows the improvement the team is continuing to make.
