Mary King MBE has got her horses back into work ready for the new season despite the inclement weather.

There are only six-and-a-half weeks til the start of the eventing season and King generally begins preparations on January 2.

She is already planning an assault on both Badminton and Kentucky four star events. Imperial Cavalier and King’s Temptress will be aiming for Badminton.

Fern Hill Urco has been away from King’s yard for 18 months, following a tendon injury but he has been back in gentle work and competing in dressage competitions from his owner’s yard for the last six months. All being well he will head to Kentucky in the spring - he was second there to King’s Temptress two years ago.

King has two new young horses in the yard, one owned by Jill Jonas and a mare which is a half sister to Imperial Cavalier and owned by a local syndicate. King said: “The horse I bought for Jill Jonas is chestnut with a white face, just like Apache Sauce who sadly died last year. The young mare is quite small but very athletic and brainy! I am not sure if she will be competed by me or Emily at the moment.”

Emily is currently on a work placement with dressage star Kyra Kyrkland and has two young horses with her. She also spent time honing her showjumping skills at a yard in Sweden before Christmas.

Footballing son Freddie was taken to hospital before Christmas after a tackle in which he sustained a suspected broken leg. Fortunately it was not broken but the bone was bruised and the strained ligaments also sustained are only just healed. He is hoping to be back in action soon.

Mary has not been idle during the close season, her engagements have included five days in Colorado, USA at an eventing convention at which she was, amongst other duties, the keynote speaker, and a teaching trip to Australia.
