Honiton seconds entertained their Cullompton counterparts in the much anticipated local derby this week and ran out comfortable winners by 22 points to nil, writes Tom Churchward.

In almost unplayable conditions, Honiton kicked off down the slope and it was clear from the off that both sides had the bit between their teeth and were keen for the victory. The opening exchanges were tough and the conditions caused several errors. However, this allowed Honiton to prove, as they have all season, their dominance in the scrum and this allowed good platform for the backs.

The impressive James Powell showed a good step to cross over for his first try of the game, which was converted by Carnall. The remainder of the half continued to be a pulsating affair, but again errors were creeping in. A superb walking maul by the Honiton pack again saw the ball get to Powell who crossed over for his second try of the game, leaving the half time score 12-0.

Making a few changes, Honiton worked their way up the slope and were playing some text book rugby, with the forwards securing good ball and the backs making good yards.

Good hands allowed Josh Webber to cross over. Cullompton started to work their way back in to the game with some good phases from the breakdown, but the Laceman’s defence held strong. With the scrums going uncontested due to conditions underfoot, Honiton worked their way up the field and from one of these scrums a good set play from the backs saw Rhys Mcgrath cross over to leave the final score at 22-0. In difficult conditions Honiton showed good character and some impressive play at times to gain revenge and local bragging rights. Honiton’s efforts were summed up by the impressive Richard Hodges who put his body on the line all day.

Next week Honiton entertain Tavistock.
