Bideford boxer Kyle de Banks receives his winners award

Bideford ABC hosted a great night of boxing in front of a sell-out crowd at the Durrant House Hotel on Friday night.

Top of the bill featured an eagerly awaited clash between Bideford heavyweights Kyle De Banks and Val Bumbul.

De Banks stamped his authority in the first round, dropping Bumbul on the deck with a strong jab. Bumbul came out swinging in the second, but had little success as De Banks showed good footwork and used his reach to great effect. Bumbul landed a big overhand right in the third, but De Banks shook it off and continued to rack up the points in this and the final round to win by a wide points margin.

Another bout between two Bideford boxers saw Kier Mckinnon and Jake Hatch matched after both their scheduled opponents pulled out.

Mckinnon started well with his hit and move tactics and when Hatch tried to load up Mckinnon held and smothered the attacks.

The tide turned in the second as Hatch knocked down Mckinnon with a big left hook. In a fantastic finale Mckinnon boxed well, using fast feet, but Hatch’s strength pinned his opponent on the ropes on several occasions. The bout could have gone either way in a great clash of styles, Mckinnon winning it on a tight points verdict.

Bideford’s Ben Owen put in a strong performance against Darrent Townley from Pilgrims ABC. Townley came at Owen with fast flurries, but Owen kept his composure, landing big left hooks.

The pace continued, with Owen showing great inside boxing ability, countering everything his opponent had to offer. Urged on by the passionate crowd, Owen set about taking his opponent out, catching him with big shots and wobbling him on several occasions. He just could not find the finishing blow, but won by a wide points margin.

Ray Penfold faced Kristian Sprangle from Mayflower ABC. He won the first couple well, showing fast hands and feet and knocking his opponent around with straight punches. Sprangle tried making a scrap of it in the last two rounds, but Penfold matched him and took a unanimous points decision.

Ryan Gumbley will feel hard done by after losing a tight majority verdict against Jake Burnard of Pilgrims ABC. Burnard took the first with greater work rate. Home town Gumbley came out fired up in the second to land strong back hands. Gumbley seemed to land the cleaner punches in the last in a crowd pleasing bout.

Other results: Jake Langdon (Bideford ABC) lost to Jared Jones (Lympstone ABC); Jamie Creek (Bideford ABC) lost to Harry Armstrong (Apollo ABC); Kye Cook (Bideford ABC) lost to Brandon Head (Apollo ABC).

Ricky so close

On Saturday, Bideford’s Ricky Dymond faced his toughest test yet against England international Eunnis Chaima in the semi-finals of NACYP championships.

The bout proved a real chess match.

Dymond worked behind his jab, trying to draw his opponent in, but Chaima showed good defensive skills, with little landing each way.

The bout opened up a bit in the second round as both boxers triedto pressurise, but both were sharp countering each other’s eagerness with long back hands.

There was nothing between the two going in the final round. Dymond got through with several combinations in the last, but in a bout that could have gone either way, victory went to Chaima who was favoured by three of the five judges to gain a majority verdict.
