ILFRACOMBE Pilot Gig Club sent crews to the National Championships for Mixed and Veterans crews in Saltash.
Fifty-four mixed crews from all over the UK took part in the first set of 11 heats, with crews having to finish in the top three to progress.
Ilfracombe A – Keith Barclay, Mandy Turner, Jack Turner, Andy Learidge, Zoe Green, Lisa Furborough and Roy Thorne (cox) - came a comfortable second in their heat. Ilfracombe B – Sarah Barclay, Gail Bennelick, Stuart Cansfield, Barry Turner, Dave Schiller, Jane Neale and Bob Thompson (cox)- made a terrible start in difficult winds, but came through to take second place, a cracking result for the B squad.
Ilfracombe were the only North Devon mixed crews to get through to the quarter finals, the A crew finishing third and the B crew fifth in the quarter-finals.
Veterans crews had better weather the next day and both the Ilfracombe crews gave stirling performances in the heats, quarter-finals and semi-finals.
Ladies’ veterans – Gail Bennelick, Jane Bridges, Lisa Furborough, Mandy Turner, Cathy Lake, Cindy Covill and Marty Hocking (cox)- made a storming start, with some great buoy turns by their coxswain. A final burst of energy on the last leg gave them second place behind a world champion crew.
The men – Keith Barclay, Ian Halls, Jason Chubb, John Stanbury, Jeremy Webb, Barry Turner and Helford Cox (cox)also got off to a great start, but were rammed by the bow of another boat on a turn and lost a couple of places. But they fought back to take third place.
