Exmouth 13, Redingensians 6

Exmouth finally succeeded in playing this league match at the third time of asking and it was a closely fought battle to the end, writes Jan McCarthy.

The match was always going to be a keenly contested encounter with the teams being third and fourth in the league respectively.

Since these teams have been meeting the Cockles have always managed to win the away fixture, but this was their first victory at the Imperial Ground over the Rams.

The match started well for Exmouth when Andrew Powell slotted over a fine penalty from 30 metres in the fifth minute.

The game continued to be very evenly contested and Redingensians got on level terms with an easy penalty on the stroke of half hour. The Cockles upped their game for the last 10 minutes of the half and were rewarded with a try by Dave Bargent converted by Powell. The try was the result of some good forward pressure in clubhouse corner when the opposition gave away several penalties giving Exmouth good line out opportunities. The lineout take by skipper Ross Morshead produced a good catch and drive from 10-metres for Bargent to touch down.

In the closing play of the half, the visitors slotted a penalty to make it 10 – 6 at the break.

The second half was a very competitive encounter with both defences being stretched and after half an hour the Rams discipline let them down giving Powell the opportunity for a successful long range conversion from over 40 metres,

The home side exerted considerable pressure on the visitors line and scrum half Garry Hooper went over the line but the referee Dan Parrott adjudged it as being held up,. This gave the Rams a new lease of life and for the last five minutes they camped on the Exmouth line but the Cockles defence held firm until the final whistle.

Saturday sees a local derby encounter at the Imperial Ground against Brixham with a 2.30pm kick off
