NORTH Devon Barbarians defeated Tiverton 19-10 at Bideford in their inaugural game.

Colts rugby in North Devon has been put through the wringer this season with Bideford, Ilfracombe, Torrington and South Molton all folding their teams due to numbers issues.

Rather than see the remaining players lost to the game, new North Devon community rugby coach Wayne Reed has acted quickly to keep the lads playing.

Players from all four clubs have been assembled under the North Devon banner in the hope of playing ad-hoc fixtures for the rest of the season.

Reed, the former Barnstaple, Exeter, Barbarians and Plymouth Albion prop, stressed he is not trying to start a new club. His aim is to improve players and coaches for the benefit of their existing clubs.

“It is not about developing a brand, but all about keeping these lads playing during tough times at their clubs,” said Reed. “The object of the exercise is to improve the players who turn up and to educate the coaches.

“Hopefully, the lads will tell their friends what a good time they have had and drag more of them along to coaching. And what we want is interesting coaching sessions which will keep players engaged.”

The Barbarians next game will be at South Molton in early January against opposition yet to be arranged. Reed’s message to potential players is ‘the more the merrier’ and with that in mind he is setting up a North Devon Barbarians Facebook page as a shop window.
