Clubs have hopes and aspirations

NO games for North Devon’s Western League teams, but a week of hope and aspirations.

Ilfracombe Town’s committee were last Thursday night looking to the future, with discussions on their expansion plans for the club and moves to strengthen its rapport with the local community.

Joint club chairman Matthew Hayne said: “We are pushing forward with expansion plans. We have not got great players’ facilities at the club and want to improve that. When I came in July I said this would be something I would like to address. Subject to planning permission, we plan to extend the building, including a bigger functions room and players’ facilities downstairs. We would also like to provide a cardio-vascular gym to help players overcome injuries.

“We are a Charter Standard club and want as many people to use the facilities as we can, including social functions upstairs. We need the club to become a part of the community. We also need to include as many income strands as we can and that is what we will press ahead with.”

One early addition will be a live football screen, which is due in the club next week.

The club is also helping with separate fund raising towards a state-of-the-art astro-turf facility at Ilfracombe College.

Combe are back in action on Saturday away to second-placed Cadbury Heath.

New striker

Barnstaple Town have completed the clearance of Luke Evans , who has previously played for Welsh side Cardiff Corinthians, and are looking forward to him joining them for this Saturday’s important game at home to fellow strugglers Radstock.

Barnstaple chairman Warren Crossley said: “Luke is moving back to the area. He is a big, tall striker and has played at a good level over there. We also have a couple of players from the Ilfracombe area coming training. Things are slowly starting to happen. It is going to be a long, hard season, but I am confident that we can get out of the basement positions in the league. Saturday will be a big game. It is one we need to win.”
