BUDLEIGH Salterton have signed fast-bowler Matt Kidd from Premier Division rivals Bovey Tracey for the season ahead, writes Conrad Sutcliffe.

Kidd, 20, only moved to Bovey during the 2011 having previously played for Cornwood.

The former Ivybridge Community College pupil, currently studying at Oxford University, wasn’t as involved as he might have liked at Bovey.

And when Budleigh skipper Joel Murphy got a call from the strapping six footer, he couldn’t wait to get the transfer papers signed.

“I think Matt moved to Bovey for the wrong reasons, which is possibly why it didn’t work out for him there,” said Murphy.

“He has come to us because he wants to play Premier cricket and improve as a player – no money is involved.

“I see it as encouraging a player with his potential wants to come to our club.

“Having lost Charlie Morris from last season we had a space for a quick bowler, which Matt will fill nicely.”

Kidd was a late developer in cricket terms, only coming to the attention of the Devon youth selectors as a 17-year-old.

He played age-group cricket for Devon at U17 and U19 level and made a solitary appearance for the senior side in 2011. Somerset have also had a look at Kidd in a 2nd XI game.

Other changes at Ottermouth for the season ahead include the appointment of Ben Carter as 2nd XI captain. He succeeds James Leat.

“There have been Carters playing for and captaining sides at Budleigh since the 1930s so I think Ben is a good appointment,” said Murphy.
