Beer Albion 5, Willand Rovers Reserves 2
Albion made a bright start to the game, but missed three or four gilt-edged chances prior to Richard Walker netting.
Just before the break the visitors levelled.
At half-time Fishermen’s boss Phil Crabb urged his side to match the work rate of the Mid Devon side.
Minutes into the second period Willand took the lead.
However, the players had clearly listened to their manager for they stepped up a gear and began to create opportunities, one of which was thumped home by Walker to level things up at 2-2.
Once Chris Long netted the first of his two goals there was no stopping Beer and they added a fifth through Mike Wheller to end comprehensive winners.
One huge plus to come for the Furzebrake men from the game was a first appearance in twelve weeks for Johnny Cooper, now clearly back to fitness after a lengthy lay-off.
Another plus was the two goals for Richard Walker who was making his return in a 1st team shirt after a long term injury.
Crabb said: “The players were superb. To a man they listened at the break to what I felt we needed to do to go on and win the game and so it proved. It was a huge win and so much more than just another three points as it puts a six point gap between us and Willand and keeps us out of that danger zone just above the bottom three. Now we need to repeat this sort of performance in the coming weeks and we’ll soon banish any fears of being drawn into a relegation avoidance battle.”
On Saturday Beer travel to Heavitree Social United who go into the game sitting fifth, five points and three places better off than Beer in the Fresha League top flight table.
