A special tree has been planted in Woodbury Salterton to commemorate one of the village’s best known residents.

Doris Eveleigh, who died in 2010 aged 85, first moved to the village in 1953, and was a founder member of its Women’s Institute (WI) branch in 1954.

As well as her WI activities, she was also a member of the Royal British Legion, distributing poppies for more than 45 years, and was involved in many aspects of village life, including teaching at Sunday school, commencing monthly whist drives, being a member of the Mothers Union, and serving as booking officer for the village hall.

In her memory, the WI decided that a tree should be planted with berries on, as it was thought that Doris, who was very keen on birds, would have wanted them to be able to feed from it.

Doris’s husband Fred, who she married in 1944, was on hand to help plant the tree.
