Radio station Bay FM has had its latest bid for funding from Exmouth Town Council refused.
The station has previously been successful with grant applications, receiving £400 in 2008 and £500 a year for the past three years.
However, members of the town council’s finance committee have now decided the station needs to fend for itself financially.
Councillor Pauline Stott said: “We have been sponsoring [Bay FM] for a long, long time. We never see, usually, any accounts, but seem to go on and on sponsoring it.
“It’s time they stood on their own feet. They came here a couple of years ago with a business plan, and that doesn’t seem to have gone anywhere.”
Exmouth mayor John Humphreys said: “They have a couple of companies advertising on the station, and I think they need to carry on their business and make it a going concern.”

I think its a bit of a shame that the council cant even find a few quid for a local charity. That's pretty shocking. I know there is more than one local charity but to not give anything to such a great local project is a poor show. From what I understand its run by volunteers who give their free time to provide a service to our community, which they did during the recent festival. They should be supported.

How short sighted of the Exmouth Town Council. Don't they understand that Bay Fm is a Community Not-for-Profit Radio Station that is run entirely by volunteers and has just been granted a full 5yr Fm Licence to provide a vital radio service to the town and provide a voice for the local community, organisations etc. They are not allowed to use advertising full time due to Ofcom regulations and have to fund the station through Grants, Service Level Agreements & Fundraising. What better way is there to promote the Town than their own Radio Station that is backed by the Local Council. Good Luck Bay Fm and looking forward to the launch later this year.

I do have some sympathy with the Town councillors in this matter, they must at last understand that they cannot go on for ever just throwing our money around even if it is to such a deserving cause as the local radio station, which has done so much to publicise the town and the councils own festival for free every year. other events have not been given the same amount of cover in th past but maybe things will now change since the paymaster has passed them over.
