Fore Street improvements to start in Ilfracombe next week.
WORK to enhance road surfaces in Ilfracombe town centre is due to start on Monday.
The existing tarmac surface of the pavement and road at the junction of Fore Street and Broad Street will be replaced with block pavers.
Work on the scheme is planned to continue until Friday, March 22 and although the roads will be closed, the council says work will be phased to minimise disruption.
Access will be maintained at all times for pedestrians and deliveries to local shops.
The £110,000 scheme is being funded through a joint partnership between Devon County Council, Ilfracombe Town Council and North Devon District Council.
Councillor Geoff Fowler said: “This higher quality road surface will replace a temporary coloured surface which, although has been successful in its delivery of initiating a café culture in Fore Street, has worn and discoloured due to the traffic use in that area.”
Ilfracombe Mayor, Lynda Courtnadge, said: “The new paving on Fore Street will be less prone to staining and more in keeping with this historic part of the town.
“The town council is pleased to support this regeneration project as it meets our strategic aims to improve our public places and the quality of our tourism offer which ultimately contributes to the town’s long-term economy.”
Councillor Stuart Hughes, county council highways member, said: “This enhancement will much improve this part of the town and its appearance will be much more in-keeping with the conservation area.”
