Lucy Milton-Banks is off to South Africa later this year.

The 20-year-old from Langtree is trying to raise £2,000 to help with a daycare centre in South Africa.

A UNIVERSITY student from Langtree is raising funds to volunteer in South Africa at a day care centre for young children.

Lucy Milton-Banks is currently studying for a foundation degree in integrated practice, early years and children at Edge Hill University.

The 20-year-old is trying to raise £2,000 for her trip in July/August and will be holding a bring and buy sale at Langtree Village Hall on March 30.

Lucy told the Gazette she has always been interested in working with children and has volunteered at a local Brownie and Girl Guide groups since she was 13.

The trip will enable her to follow her dreams of working with children around the world.

She said: “South Africa has a huge divide between rich and poor communities; many people live in townships without adequate resources or facilities for their children to receive a decent education.

“The project provides activities and three meals a day to roughly 60 children from the age of seven months to six years. “Regrettably however, there is very few full time staff present at this day care centre to properly care for all the children.

“There is therefore a huge need for extra pairs of hands.”

Lucy is now looking for donations for the bring and buy sale she will be running, as well as a raffle on the day.

She said: “It will be an opportunity to de clutter and sell bric-a-brac, books, homemade crafts, preserves, chutneys and cakes.

“I have always been up for helping out with anything local and I am hoping others can return the favour or just support ‘a local’ fundraising for a good cause.”

For more information or to book a table, contact Lucy’s mum Pat on 01805 601315.
