Man winched to safety by Sea King.

A HOLIDAYMAKER has been rescued after being cut off by the tide at Lynmouth this afternoon.

The man, thought to be in his 30s, became stranded after climbing down to the shoreline at Countisbury Cove. A friend ran to a nearby shop to raise the alarm with Swansea Coastguard.

Coastguard rescue officers from Lynmouth were sent to the area and the Sea King rescue helicopter from RAF Chivenor was also scrambled.

David Jones, watch manager at Swansea Coastguard, said: “The man we believe was visiting the area with two friends when he decided to climb down to the shoreline, where he became stranded.

“The rescue helicopter was able to winch him to a position of safety and into the care of the Coastguard Rescue officers.

“We would like to remind the public if you are not familiar with the stretch of coastline you are visiting to check the weather and tidal conditions before you set out, so that you can prepare accordingly.

“This will prevent you from becoming cut off by the tide and not put you at risk. If in doubt contact the coastguard or in an emergency ring 999 and ask for the coastguard.”
