The Exe Estuary Cycle Trail is closed north of Lympstone after flood damage caused a section of the path to be washed away.

The damage has occurred on the path between Lympstone and Lympstone Commando railway stations, on a small section of tarmac between two elevated wooden sections across marshland.

A hole around one metre across has opened up in the surface, where it has apparently been washed away by raging waters below.

The trail was developed and constructed by Devon County Council as part of the National Cycle Network Route 2.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, cabinet member for highways and transportation, said the extent of the damage was still being looked at, and it was too early to say how long repairs would take, or when the path would reopen.
