Young people urged to attend free cardiac screening event.

YOUNG men and women are being urged to undergo a free screening to check for undiagnosed heart conditions in Bideford this weekend.

Pain free, non-invasive cardiac screenings for 14-35-year-olds are being held at Bideford College on Saturday and Sunday.

The tests usually cost £35 per person but donations to charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), in memory of Hartland teenager Martyn Luckett, are funding the appointments.

Martyn, 19, from Hartland, died suddenly of myocarditis nearly eight years ago.

In the last four years, more than 300 people have been screened at previous events held in North Devon, with some heart abnormalities detected.

His mother Brenda said: “Martyn was a fit healthy young man and keen motor cycle trials rider, representing the South West Centre on many occasions. We were very proud of him and this changed our lives completely.

“We have always done fund raising and have raised £30,000 in the last six years for other people to be tested.”

Dr Steven Cox, CRY’s director of screening, said: “Twelve young people die every week in the UK and one in every three hundred apparently fit and healthy young people have a serious underlying condition.

“It is essential that anyone with a condition knows about it. The test is quick and painless.”
