Just leave it alone

SIR - What an awful idea!

Why do people think that “an incredibly underused” space has to be filled up/used?

Can’t we have nice quiet underused places? Is it not allowed?

I am not local but visit Sidmouth regularly and I use Church Lane precisely for that reason - it is a nice quiet shortcut across town, which offers access to Blackmore Gardens, another usually peaceful place.

To cover this “alleyway” and try to turn it into a commercial venture is such a bad idea. Please leave it alone!!

  • I too have pleaded for the project not to be carried out in Church Lane. It is a rare sight as it is, perhaps precisely because of its underused aspect. I often walk through it and enjoy the quiet atmosphere that reigns there. Its plain brick wall offers the perfect view before entering Blackmore Gardens by the side gate - It is really like discovering a secret garden behind a slightly bleak exterior. The wall by the Health Centre and Library could do with this sort of initiative to brighten them up, though...

  • Absolutely - leave it alone! What a crackpot idea. I honestly don't know how these people get an audience for their silly projects.
