The new owner of the former St Michael’s School has agreed to save the nursery
THE jobs of 28 employees have been saved after the new owner of Tawstock Court announced the nursery would stay.
The former St Michael’s School has been sold for to property investor Rik Peryer, who has agreed to continue to house St Michael’s Nursery.
Mr Peryer, who bought the property for an undisclosed sum, will be using the Grade II listed building as a private residence.
Friends of the former school fought to keep the nursery running when the school went into administration in December.
Mr Peryer said: “I am pleased to announce that we have now reached an agreement with the nursery school that will safeguard its future at Tawstock Court.”
“We look forward to having St Michael’s Nursery as our neighbours, with their own clearly defined space on the Tawstock Court estate.”
James Petherick, of independent property adviser GVA who handled the sale, said: “This was an unusual sale which attracted a number of serious enquiries.
“The completion to Mr Peryer will see the house returned to its original use as a private dwelling, as well as safeguarding the future of St Michael’s School Nursery, which is good news for its staff and pupils.”
On the Friends of St Michael’s Tawstock Court Facebook group, members of the volunteer committee said: “It has been a difficult journey in the last five months, we have all learnt a great deal and tested family patience to the full.
“We have moved mountains and ignored brick walls. The end result could never be predicted right from the very first e-mail sent to parents on 27th December, but one way or another we have ended up at the right conclusion and one which we feel justified in celebrating.”
The main house was believed to have been built in 1787, and was used as a private residence before St Michael’s School opened.
The sale included the main house, as well as a number of outbuildings and facilities including the nursery, an outdoor swimming pool, a theatre and sports pitches.
