Formal link with Barfleur set to be ratified by both communities in the coming months

Lyme’s twinning links with the French coastal town of Barfleur are set to get a double “oui”.

Ceremonies on both sides of the Channel are planned for May and September to formally ratify the partnership.

More details will be revealed at the Lyme Regis-Barfleur Twinning Association’s annual meeting on Thursday, February 28.

It has already been confirmed that the first formal twinning stage will take place in Barfleur during the weekend of May 25 and 26.

The association’s committee discussed plans at a meeting last week and announced that formalities would be complete when a Barfleurais contingent visits Lyme on September 21 and 22.

The annual meeting, in the Guildhall starting at 7.30pm, is open to all members of the association, and prospective newcomers are welcome.

“We also hope that as many as possible will join us for the important trip to Barfleur in May,” said chairman John Dover.

Among the highlights of the annual meeting it is hoped to screen video material shot by Michel Mauger, one of Barfleur’s three deputy mayors.

The Lyme Regis/Barfleur Twinning Association now has 46 members who can benefit from discounted fares on the Brittany Ferries ship sailing from Poole to Cherbourg.

John Dover added: “We are very pleased at the interest being shown in our twinning plans.

“We aim to make the annual meeting as convivial as possible with wine and nibbles and the opportunity to hear about our activities in the past year and during 2013.

“The coming months are very important in cementing the relationship between our two historic and vibrant maritime communities.”

Membership of the association is £10 or £15 for a couple or two adults and children. New members will be able to join at the annual meeting.
