‘High quality budget hotel, family restaurant and family drive –thru facility’ planned for prime out-of-town development site.
PLANS to build a new Premier Inn hotel, Brewers Fayre restaurant and a McDonald’s in Bideford are being launched with a public consultation next week.
Parent company Whitbread and fast food restaurant McDonald’s have been working on proposals for the land opposite Atlantic Village.
The Atlantic Park development would include a 70-bed Premier Inn hotel, 190-cover Brewers Fayre restaurant and an 85-seat McDonald’s restaurant and drive-thru and could create around 100 new jobs.
A public consultation and exhibition will be held from 12noon until 8pm on Thursday, June 21 at Atlantic Village with a further consultation to be confirmed for Bideford town centre at a later date.
Plans for a Premier Inn development in Bideford were first reported in the Gazette in February 2011 and the developers now say they are looking to submit a full planning application next month.
Planning agent Maria Bailey said: “For many years sites have been looked at to provide strategic roadside facilities to serve Bideford and its surrounding area.
“Atlantic Park now provides the opportunity to do this and the owners, their agents and the investors want to consult with the community on the proposal for a high quality budget hotel, family restaurant and family drive –thru facility.
“We are aware the woodland on the site has some importance to the local people and have been working closely with Natural England and Devon Wildlife Trust to plant better quality woodland in any undeveloped areas.”

Is the area being considered the exact location in the photo above? If we are talking about something to best serve Bideford and it's surrounding area, then we should be fully against that area being used as it is full of trees. We are really scraping the barrel for forests in the area already! We need those trees to clean our air and keep us alive! A McDonalds will only damage everyone's health.

How dismal that this is apparently what is needed in Bideford...and no pride of place for the Kathleen and May which looked stunning at the Queens jubilee pageant on the river Thames...viewed by millions round the world but lacking council support in Bideford

I'm largely in favour of the Premier Inn and Brewers Fayre pub, my experiences of both have always been positive. In terms of McDonalds I reckon we can take or leave, it could become a bit of a centre for the local wasters to hang out, make a nuisance of themselves and generally make a mess. But we shall have to wait and see I guess, assuming it all gets planning permission that is. For the nays out there, I'm sorry to say that I would expect to see more and more of these commercial \ PLC type developments in and around Bideford and Barnstaple simply because there are housing developments lined up featuring thousands of homes, homes (in theory) equals money equals large companies wanting a slice of the action. It's still unclear to my mind who's going to buy these homes since local people for the most part are on very low salaries and will never get a mortgage, and there's not much point moving to the area from outside when there are very few jobs, skilled or unskilled.
