Exmouth women plan to live on just £1 a day

Exmouth’s Laura McAdam and Helen Burgess will find out what it’s like to live below the poverty line when they attempt to live on just £1 each a day

Luxury goes out of the window next week when two Exmouth woman attempt to live on £1 a day.

Laura McAdam and Helen Burgess are supporting Christian Aid by taking part in the Live Below the Line challenge – where thousands of people will from April 9-13 raise awareness about issues of global poverty.

Those taking part in the UK and internationally will spend just £1 a day on food.

The Exmouth pair has taken their challenge one step further - spending just £1 each day for a week on food, accommodation and general living costs – that means no rent, no transport, and definitely no luxury items.

Helen and Laura will also donate the money they would have spent on food to the cause, as well as raising sponsorship.

The pair hopes the experience will raise money and awareness of what poverty truly means.

Helen said: “We are going to try and stretch the £1 a day each to cover all our living costs - so we’re camping and working out how much shampoo and toothpaste we can afford.”

Laura said: “Sometimes we think to ourselves ‘but £1 would go so much further overseas’ - but that’s not the case.

“It’s simply not possible to cover your food, accommodation, health and education for £1 or less, hence the truly shocking conditions 1.4 billion people are having to live in.”
