Exmouth: diver airlifted to hospital suffering from ‘bends’

A man diving on a wreck off Exmouth was airlifted to hospital after suffering decompression illness

A male diver was airlifted out of Exmouth’s Marina on Sunday after suffering decompression sickness.

The man, who had been diving near a wreck off Exmouth, was taken by Devon Air Ambulance to the Hyperbaric Medical Centre in Plymouth where he was expected to make a full recovery.

The casualty received treatment in recompression chamber after suffering the bends - decompression illness – although medics said his condition was not caused by rapid surfacing.

Dr. Sally Simmons from the Hyperbaric Medical Centre said: “He was diving near a wreck off Exmouth and seems to have been without any fault in the situation.

“Some times divers can get decompression sickness even though they ascend to the surface in the timely way they are supposed to.”
