The long term stability of the A399 is called into question as engineers examine cliff face edging closer.
ENGINEERS have been called out to examine a cliff face at Hele Bay near Ilfracombe as it edges closer to the road.
Yesterday (Sun) Hugh Griffith, highway operations control centre manager for Devon County Council, said on Twitter: “A399 Hele Bay Ilfracombe large landslip on going close to this road #devonroads.”
The road is still open and not thought to be at risk at the present time but engineers have been called as a precaution.
Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: “The edge of the cliff is approximately six metres (20 feet) from the edge of the A399 and the road is not currently thought to be at risk and remains open to traffic.
“As a precaution specialist engineers from Devon County Council will be carrying out investigations to ensure the long term stability of the road.”
