Crews tackle gorse fire

A large area of gorse on common land near Budleigh Salterton caught fire earlier today

The fire service was called to a report of a fire at Bicton Common, near Budleigh Salterton, on Thursday morning.

The fire service said the blaze involved two hectares of gorse and has now been brought under control, with some crews leaving the scene.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and rescue Service spokesperson said: “Fire control mobilised four fire appliances and four special appliances upon receipt of the call.

“When in attendance the fire crews asked for more fire appliances which then involved in total eight fire appliances and six special appliances.”

The crews used five hose reel jets and one compressed air foam jet to tackle the blaze.
