Council commit to helping young people with new pilot scheme

A new budget set by councillors will enable young people to create new opportunities and apply for funding.

A PILOT scheme has been backed by £30,000 of funding from Torridge District Council to provide opportunities for young people.

Sports events, equipment for youth clubs, organising a community event or attending training courses or workshops are all examples of projects which could benefit from the new Youth Initiative Budget.

The budget was unanimously backed by the council’s community and resources committee last Monday to help 11-19 year-olds in Torridge.

Cllr Jane Whittaker, lead member for communities, said: “We really want to encourage young people to make the most of this funding.

“With up to £5,000 available for each application, it is a chance for them to not only make a difference in their own lives, but also in their communities as well.”

Cllr Barry Parsons, leader of the council, said: “One of the Council’s priority areas in 2012/13 is to engage productively with young people.

“Members are highly committed to this £30,000 pilot project. I hope this is an indication to all our young people how much we value them and the work they do for all of us.

“Torridge District Councillors look forward to seeing some of the benefits of this scheme as soon as is practicable.”

Individuals or groups can apply for the funding from May 1. Parents or adults can apply on their behalf but the young people must be actively involved in drafting the application.

For more information or to apply visit www.torridge.gov.uk/youthbudget from May 1 or call the community development officer on 01237 428756.
