Councillor Rodney Cann believes Barnstaple Pannier Market would benefit hugely from a new 'concert coner' performance area.

Councillor proposes new performing platform to help boost the local economy.

THE strains of music could become a regular feature at Barnstaple Pannier Market if a new ‘concert corner’ idea takes off.

Councillor Rodney Cann has suggested a small stage that local or visiting performers could use on market days to help boost both trade and the arts.

“It’s common in many famous places all over the world and I just thought, if it works for Key West, why not Barnstaple?” he said.

“A ‘concert corner’ or Panniers Platform’ could generate excitement, help to transform the area, create new trade and even bring a whole new generation into the market.”

The deputy leader of North Devon Council has suggested a stage area could be placed at the end of the market which backs on to the Queen’s Theatre.

He said that as well as a spot for local musicians to play, the area could be used by theatre performers to help drum up interest in their forthcoming shows.

“There has been very positive from everyone I have spoken to,” added Mr Cann.

“North Devon Council has agreed to investigate and pursue it further and we are now looking to bring a report to a meeting of the executive committee.

“Any scheme would have to be carefully managed, with a booking system and we would have to consult with the traders, but it might just be the boost the market needs.”
