New trust will give Bideford College more power over day-to-day running of school.

BIDEFORD College has gained more power over the day-to-day running of the school by becoming a co-operative trust school.

The newly-formed Bideford Bay Co-operative Learning Trust employs its own staff, is responsible for student admissions and holds the colleges land and capital assets.

The move sees the college join an ever-growing family of more than 200 other co-operative trust schools in England.

It is hoped the college will be able to work with other co-operative trust schools in the area to pool resources, expertise and knowledge and provide.

Doug Bushby, chairman of governors, said: “This move for the college has come at a very good time and it will allow us to be more flexible in the way in which we can work with the wider community.”

College principal, Veronica Matthews, added: “I would like to thank all of our students and staff, parents and community who responded to the trust questionnaire and those who attended the consultation meetings.

“We now look forward to developing this sense of partnership within our local community as well as with other like-minded schools.”

Dave Boston, chief executive of the Schools Co-operative Society, said: ‘The values-led approach embedded in co-operative trusts has been one of the main attractions to heads and governors looking for an ethical alternative among new school models.

“We’re delighted that there continues to be a surge interest in co-operative schools, as not only does it mean more schools working together to share expertise, it means students across the country can learn about the values in principles of co-operation in school, then take them with them out into the wider world of work to become the co-operators of tomorrow.”
