Cashpoint users ‘spend a penny’

Police in Honiton have fined three people after they were caught on CCTV urinating in a bank foyer.

People ‘caught short’ in the High Street have been using a bank foyer – not just to withdraw money but to spend a penny.

Police in Honiton have issued a stark warning to the public following a number of “upsetting” incidents at Barclays’ cashpoint lobby.

Two men in their mid to late 20s and a woman in her early 20s have been issued with £80 penalty notices after being found urinating in the lobby.

The culprits – all from the local area – were identified after being caught on CCTV.

PCSO Darren England said: “We really want it to stop for health and safety reasons – and that it is upsetting for the staff, who have to clean it up, and the customers at the bank.

“If people get caught doing this they will be prosecuted.”

The three separate incidents have taken place in the early hours of the morning.

Barclays says it will continue to monitor the situation and report any further incidents to the police, who will deal with anyone caught acting in this manner.

Currently the public toilets in Lace Walk and King Street, which are run by East Devon District Council, close from 7pm.

A council spokesman said: “The Lace Walk and King Street toilets, along with many other toilet blocks across the district, close at 7pm in the winter months to reduce the threat of vandalism so that they are open during the daytime for people to use.

“For a trial period we are changing the automatic timer at King Street so these toilets will close at 10pm. Of course, anyone wishing to use the toilet later than 10pm will still have limited choice.

“But the council cannot control the behaviour of people who for whatever reason feel the need to answer the call of nature late in the evening.

“For those who may have been drinking in a local pub, the obvious answer is to use the facilities there before heading for home.”
