An Exmouth father is planning to cycle from Lands End to John O’Groats to raise money for charity.

Brian Hampson, 60, says he has been talking about doing the ride for many years, but was spurred into action after his son-in-law James was diagnosed with a brain tumour last summer, only two weeks before he was due to marry Brian’s daughter Gemma.

After a ten-hour operation, James has made good progress, and married Gemma a couple of months later.

Now, Brian is aiming to raise money for Brain Tumour Research, as well as realise a long held ambition to complete the ride with friend and regular cycling partner Jim Ritchie.

Brian said: “We’ve been talking about it for years and years, and thought if we don’t do it now then we’ll never do it.”

Brian and Jim will begin the challenge on June 22, and hope to arrive at John O’Groats on July 7.

They will be following a 990 mile route – not the shortest possible, but one they hope will be easier to ride.

Brian, who runs a car dealership in Tiverton, has set an initial fundraising target of £2,500, but having already raised more than £800 says this target may increase closer to the ride.
