BREAKING: New ice threat to flooded roads

Archant

Gritters are to be sent out overnight on Devon’s road network as temperatures are expected to drop below freezing and ice over flooded roads.

Motorists are being urged to take extra caution on the roads this evening and into tomorrow morning as a cold snap hits the county.

A statement from the county council said it is sending out gritting trucks at 1am and possibly again at 6am, with the aim of keeping the 20 per cent of Devon’s roads which carry 70 per cent of its traffic ice free.

Cabinet member for Highways and Transportation, Stuart Hughes, said: “Obviously with all the recent flooding and so much water running off from the surrounding land, freezing temperatures could bring extremely icy conditions.

“Whilst the gritters will be out in force, don’t assume a road has been treated.

“I would advise residents to drive with extreme caution certainly over the coming days whilst freezing temperatures are expected.”

Meanwhile, problems remain on roads and bridges across Devon due to flooding or water damage.

The A379 at Frogmore is closed due to a burst water main, Wisdome Bridge in Cornwood is closed due to flood damage, Waterstave Bridge near Bradninch is closed, and the road from Halberton to Sampford Peverell will be shut until at least tomorrow due to the canal works.
