New traffic calming scheme gets first road test during the Easter break.
A well-known Braunton “rat run” has become a one-way street following the completion of a new traffic calming scheme.
Work on the £50,000 system in South Street, part funded with a developer contribution from Tesco, finished on Thursday.
The Devon County Council scheme, approved in November last year, provides a series of road narrowing chicanes in order to reinforce the existing 20mph speed limit from its junction with Velator Link and Sings Lane.
One way signing for part of the street is also be in place, with traffic entering South Street from Exeter Road only able to go as far as Sings Lane.
Residents have objected to the volume and speed of traffic in the narrow street for several years. It was used by locals to avoid congestion in the centre of Braunton.

As someone who actually lives on this street, it's bad news. Traffic speed will increase (as no risk of meeting oncoming traffic), the so called 'pinch points' allow an articulated lorry through, pedestrians are still not catered for. And as most of the traffic was going south to north *Saunton bound' they will enjoy their new high speed bypass at the residents cost.

I'm sure people heading for Saunton and Croyde will find South Street much improved as a way of avoiding the village centre now that there's no oncoming traffic.
