BRAUNTON is gearing up for some royal visitors today (Tues) as the village awaits the arrival of Prince Charles and Camilla.

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall are visiting the village in the wake of the devastating flooding on December 22.

Some businesses are yet to reopen since Caen Street and much of the surrounding area was submerged under up to four ft of water.

Several houses were also flooded and many residents were evacuated as the river’s flood defences failed to withhold the barrage of water after heavy rainfall.

The royal visit came as a surprise to Braunton Parish Council chairman Liz Spear.

She said: “A few weeks ago the doorbell to the parish offices sounded and there were about 15 people stood there.

“They turned out to be plainclothes police officers and people from the Lord Lieutenant’s office.

“They asked to see the Parish Hall and we had no idea why; then they told us Prince Charles wanted to visit, we couldn’t believe it.

“It is all very exciting news for the village.”

The royal couple will be visiting businesses affected by the flooding, before speaking to residents, emergency services and volunteers.

Caen Street will be closed from 10am this morning until 12pm and the parish council offices will be closed until 2pm.
