Bedding wanted for families fighting the cold

A Torrington charity is pleading for donations of bedding to help families on low income this winter.
A CHARITY in Torrington is appealing for donations of bedding and electric blankets after receiving a number of requests from those struggling against the cold.
The Stepping Stones Centre, formerly ROC Torrington, works to help those with mental health issues through a number of support groups, music and art sessions and courses.
But Kiz Angell, of the centre, said it has had a number of people on low income asking for duvets, blankets, pillows and sleeping bags to help get through the winter.
“Many of these pleas are for children, and we are asking people to please help if they can and donate any items possible,” she said.
Tash Wild, 26, has been visiting the centre for a year and her two-year-old daughter Ellie has just benefitted from a donated electric blanket and duvet.
She said: “Ellie has a really low immune system so being able to keep her warm in bed has meant she gets over her illnesses a lot quicker.
“When I first started visiting the centre I had really low confidence but it’s just so nice to be able to sit and chat to people in similar situations.
“I don’t know what I would have done if I didn’t have this place.”
The charity is also asking for donations of toys for the children of the families who use the centre.
Kiz said: “Most of the children are below the age of 10, although we have a few teenagers too, and their families perhaps cannot afford to give them a gift.
“If you’re buying presents and there is a three-for-two offer on, perhaps you could think about getting the free gift for one of the children here and making their Christmas.”
Any donations for the Stepping Stones Centre can be dropped off at the Foodbank at the centre at 31 South Street on Saturday or at the Baptist Church on Tuesday from 10am -12pm.
