Axminster Carpets: ‘There is still hope’

East Devon District Council’s cabinet member for the economy issues statement. Efforts under way to limit potential damage to wider business community in Axminster.

Practical measures can be taken to save Axminster Carpets.

That is the message Councillor Graham Godbeer, East Devon District Council’s cabinet member for the economy, has for the townspeople today (Friday).

He says ‘there is still hope’.

Councillor Godbeer, who is also a member of Axminster Town Council, told the Midweek Herald: “Much has already been said and written about how tragic it is that this iconic local company is in trouble – and of course I concur with that.

“What we must also remember is that there is still hope for Axminster Carpets and the all-important jobs it provides to be salvaged from this distressing situation.

“There are practical measures that can be taken – especially now that the management have applied for administration.

“East Devon District Council has been a key player in the talks that have been taking place this week to explore options for minimising the damage not only to the company but to key elements of the community that might be affected by the fallout from a funding shortfall.”

Councillor Godbeer added: “The council isn’t only concerned about the future of Axminster Carpets and the people that work there.

“We are also keenly aware of the potential for damage to the town’s small businesses and the people who depend on them.

“We want to ensure that all local businesses know about the help available to them through our sponsorship of Business Information Point. BIP is a fully independent business support agency whose job it is to provide high quality advice and training support to local businesses. Their expertise is founded upon a first-hand knowledge of small business issues.

“We will also jointly promote the principle of funding from the Making It Local (MIL) scheme to help protect local interests that could be affected by the problems at Axminster Carpets. A prime example is the Axminster Heritage Museum.”
