One bag is all you need in Lyme Regis
EVERY household in Lyme Regis will receive a free re-usable shopping bag as the Turn Lyme Green environmental group aims to free the town of plastic carrier bags.
The Green Bag Giveaway Day will begin at 9am on Saturday, November 10, when members of Turn Lyme Green will gather in the town centre to hand out thousands of the cotton, fair-trade bags that bare the Turn Lyme Green logo.
Street entertainment will be provided by Taiko drummers and if weather permits, a 'bag sew-in' will be held under the arches where Lyme seamstresses will whip up carriers from recycled materials like old curtains and vintage textiles.
The move is the first step towards Turn Lyme Green's goal of being amongst the first six towns in Britain to go completely plastic-bag-free.
Many town traders have already shown their support by using only paper or corn starch bags in store and the group hopes that by the height of the tourist season next year, every shop will have followed suit.
"We're not asking traders to just throw away all their plastic bags," said Sarah Stacey, member of Turn Lyme Green Steering Group.
"But we hope that when traders come to order their next batch they will consider using a sustainable type of bag, rather than plastic."
According to a Turn Lyme Green statement presented to Lyme Regis Town Council, "we use plastic bags for an average of 12 minutes but their damage lasts hundreds of years".
Modbury in South Devon was the first town in Devon to go plastic-bag-free thanks in no small part to the campaigning of Marine Biologist, Rebecca Hoskings, who had been appalled at the carnage these bags cause to wildlife, both on sea and land.
A launch night will also be held at The Marine Theatre at 7.30pm on Thursday, November 8, where Origin organic beauty company will raffle 12 goody bags as part of their support for Turn Lyme Green's cause.
Sarah Stacey continued: "We hope to carry out more of these events in the future with low-energy light bulbs and other sustainable living measures to fit in with a low-carbon lifestyle.
