WOODBURY man Roger Stokes gives us a glimpse of the past with photographs from his mammoth collection.
Roger, who lives in Woodbury, has used the photographs to produce a book and a website, www.woodburydevon.co.uk

This picture, taken in the early years of the 20th century, shows quite probably most of the pupils of Woodbury School sitting on the wall during a break or lunch time.
Back then the school had beautiful tall and shaped chimneys and a bell turret. More on the bell turret can be seen next week, as something rather unique happened to it in 1911.
In the cottages to the left of the picture lived various characters including several generations of the Bastin family. They operated a bakery and were also basket makers.
Some of the children were known to play truant from school to help "Blind" Bastin, who usually sat in his doorway, skim willows for his potato baskets. This seemed more profitable and interesting than going to school! This overall scene has changed little over 100 years. |
