WOODBURY man Roger Stokes gives us a glimpse of the past with photographs from his mammoth collection.

Roger, who lives in Woodbury, has used the photographs to produce a book and a website, www.woodburydevon.co.uk

Early 1900s on Woodbury Common.

Here we have another picture taken in the early 1900s on Woodbury Common.

This shows the full extent of a military camp, whereby the band members also had to turn up to play the music for the Sunday service.

The whole exercise of getting there with all the military equipment, plus the band gear, must have been an enormous exercise.

However, this was the way of life at the time, and they certainly have to be commended for a good turnout. My thanks to Journal reader Phil Adams from Exmouth who made a comment on a previous common photo, where I stated that “IY” stood for Infantry Yeomanry.

It appears that this should be” Imperial Yeomanry”, the men of which were used extensively during the second half of the Boer War. Phil was obviously more attentive in history lessons than I was!

All comments are welcome, especially ones which can fill in extra information, and maybe a humourous story brought to mind after seeing a picture.

Of course if there are any old pictures of Woodbury parish still “out there”, I would be most interested to be able to scan them so that they could be added to the collection.
