The Woodbury Fire Brigade was formed in the 1860s, following a series of devastating fires, both in Woodbury itself and also Woodbury Salterton.
The original fire engine was bought by Robert Brent who paid for it himself, and it was operated by the Woodbury Volunteers. Abraham Berry was the first captain of the brigade, which was horse drawn throughout its entire life. No sirens just the bugler sounding the charge!
By the turn of the century William Abbott, the ironmonger, had taken over the reins, followed later by George Berry. The brigade continued in force until 1929, when it was disbanded. Fire cover was then provided from Topsham, from where it still comes today.
