Another picture of the activities of the Woodbury Young Farmers’ Club in the early 1940s taken at Gulliford Farm.
To be able to appreciate a good animal for breeding was a major requirement for a farmer – and, of course, still is.
Stock judging classes were held regularly at members’ farms so that the up-and-coming farmers could award points to different animals.
There was always a good one and a bad one and you had to know the difference! You would then be required to give your reasons verbally, which would be assessed by the tutor of the day against his own assessment and grading.
The YFC held county and national competitions for stock judging, in which Woodbury used to do quite well. |
