Exmouth Town - who is being permitted to demolish it?
Have you been to the town recently - I know many residents avoid it, charity shops galore, a carbunkle of a building (half built) on the seafront - and now the centre point, The Strand Gardens, vandalised, left looking bare, desloate and uninviting. Is there someone employed by us hell bent on bringing Exmouth to it's knees? - I can't be the only local who feels so strongly about this?
Re: Exmouth Town - who is being permitted to demolish it?
There were a number of exhibitions throughout 2009 in Strand gardens and at the town hall, all advertised in the local press (Journal AND Herald) regarding the "vision" that will become the Strand gardens for the 21st century
The question of the trees has been addressed a number of times too, and many complained loudly about the changes, so where were you before those beautiful un-diseased chestnut trees were hacked down?
Perhaps someone should be asking the council to get a second opinion on the condition of the trees ..... oh, no hang on, .. what can they do now, the trees have gone ... same old story! ( do any of you oldies remember the Volunteer? ... as soon as there was talk of preserving it, the place was demolished over a weekend!! ) .. but that's another story to add to an already long list .....
Re: Exmouth Town - who is being permitted to demolish it?
I remember the Volunteer, I had a few beers in there as a young man, before the council allowed the town to be gutted!. Isn't it a shame they didn't learn their lessons from back then? Now we have a central area that used to be "green and pleasant land" reduced to some "post apocalyptic moonscape", with once thriving and healthy trees reduced to stumps. I wonder if one was a follower of probability, what the probability would be that you wanted to develop an area of land and your development relied on the destruction of some trees, what odds would a bookie give that all the trees would miraculously be diseased? Strange how in this case, the trees were so poorly that they needed to be destroyed. Remember people, those in charge of this destruction are the same people of whom one said of "Johnny G's" steakhouse "This Victorian Style Frontage is just what we need for the town centre", would you trust someone with this little vision to run our town centre? I certainly wouldn't. Instead of pouring three million pounds down the toilet to destroy the strand gardens, perhaps they would have been better to spend the money and the Rolle Campus and use it to stimulate, jobs and learning opportunities in the Town. For what good is a new green space, when only the unemployed will be able to enjoy it!!! It is criminal to steal a purse, daring to steal a fortune, a mark of greatness to steal a crown. The blame diminishes as the guilt increases
Re: Exmouth Town - who is being permitted to demolish it?
Although I am sure that the £3 million to undertake the work will be money well spent (a bit of sarcasm there!!), who in their right mind decided to use white paving slabs? Those outside the take-away next to the cinema are already stained with the detritus from the take-away - and chewing gum will show up nicely (maybe that's why they chose white?!) Couldn't a nice decorative pattern be used, not just plain? I had a look at the suggested designs when the 'roadshow' was in the Magnolia Centre, and highlighted my concerns. I also asked if the slabs will be maintained properly, if damaged - those damaged in the Magnolia Centre get replaced with black tarmac! And the monstrosity of what I can only assume is going to be a bus-shelter...!!!
The council should learn from the Princesshay shopping centre - immaculately clean, and not a sign of chewing gum anywhere. I assume it gets removed nightly.
Re: Exmouth Town - who is being permitted to demolish it?
I would not bring the Southerhay development into this discussion as it a) cost a whole heap of money mre than Exmouth is getting and b) the stores are leaving faster than they can find replacements to fill the empty spaces. If any of those who read or contribute to these forums do not already know EDDC have another consultancy looking at how Exmouth can be revitalisaed? and they are to have a public exhibition to sell their ideas soon. Dont think that a supermarket and housing are dead on the estuary site because they are not!! Dissenters to the baracades PDQ!! Make sure that you see the exhibition and make your views known when the time comes. Complaining after the event will just not do the trick. worried resident thinking about my grandkids future
Re: Exmouth Town - who is being permitted to demolish it?
Superb, we may get an Asda after all and the joy of a choice, rather than Tesco's monopoly.......But I suppose it will still depend on which developer is going to pay the biggest sweetener to the council in the end. How nice to see as a footnote, that "Jimmy G's" Victorian Fronted steakhouse has closed its doors..."Just what the town needs"...obviously not....room for another Kebab Shop now methinks. It is criminal to steal a purse, daring to steal a fortune, a mark of greatness to steal a crown. The blame diminishes as the guilt increases
Re: Exmouth Town - who is being permitted to demolish it?
I see that the desecration of the Strand Gardens is gaining impetus - a £400,000 (part of the £3m, or extra?) building and performance stage has now been announced. I don't remember seeing this at the public 'consultation', or on the plans that are posted at the site. This building will house a kiosk (purpose not stated), a cafe (are there not enough in the area already? More rubbish to blow around.), a tourist information centre (there is one only 300 metres away), offices (?!?!), and a performance stage. This building will 'be delivered in time for the summer of 2011' - I understood all works would be complete by November 2010. Eileen Wragg states 'The building will add a modern dimension to the older buildings surrounding the area...' - which to me means, will be totally out of keeping with the area.
The Strand Gardens - open space for all to enjoy? Sorry, views across now gone!
Well done, the council!!!! May just as well have put the Asda there!
Re: Exmouth Town - who is being permitted to demolish it?
yea a shame to see the steak house go but what an opportunity to convert the premises int into the TIC and save the huge cost of the glass monstrosity that Councillor Wragg is so pleased to see on the Strand. Saving that estimate £400,000 is enough excuse to get on with this and put the TIC in the front line of the town's best (we hope) used open space. worried resident thinking about my grandkids future
