Sidmouth Shopping Centre to close at end of January 2010?
It now appears that the lease holder of the Shopping Centre has contacted the manager to tell him that the market would trade until the end of January and that all traders must be out by the end of February - the future of the 'indoor market' is therefore looking very bleak.
So - why is the market closing? Has a supermarket chain got their eyes on the site? Tesco's have denied any interest - what about Sainsburys'?

Shopping Centre closing? This is a crying shame - why is it that all these doom and gloom announcements always come out to screw people around Christmas time?
Re: Sidmouth Shopping Centre to close at end of January 2010?
What sites are available for the 'evicted' stallholders to relocate to? With hindsight the old Woolies premises would have been ideal - much better than a clothes chain that we're lumbered with.
There just isn't a suitable site that I can think of - not one large enough to take the job-lot of traders.

maybe the food hall part could move to the old SES building - ? I can't remember how big that is inside. Out of curiousity, what was the Indoor Market before it was a market? - was it built as something else or not?

I seem to recall that the owner of the old SES premises is not interested in letting out the site but wants to sell it at some ridiculous high price - hence it has been an empty eyesore for years.
The indoor market was a garage/showroom before it evolved into the walk-through market. You can still see the old 'car showroom type' doors at the front on High Street - they would fold back to allow vehicles to be driven in/out.
I just cannot understand how the traders there could have thought that all was ok if they hadn't been given their 'licences' to trade when they were due last June - didn't they suspect something was amiss? I think it was quite obvious that the market was probably not doing very well when there were so many vacant pitches as some of the businesses moved out. A few of the pitches there seem to be taken by the Pet stall who appear to have diversified some of their wares - have they been paying rent for each pitch or just taken advantage of the empty spaces?
Have all the traders been paying their rent on-time? There could be many reasons as to why the owner/leaseholder have decided to sell up.

The idea of using the run-down SES building is great. It is huge inside, with flats above, and it is a travesty it has been allowed to stay empty for five or so years. Maybe EDDC should put a compulsory purchase order on it or insist it is sold or let within 6 months.

There are some good 'sale' bargains to be had at the Health Food stall in the market. An ideal opportunity to buy your Christmas nuts at a discount - although I do reckon you can't beat cracking your own nuts at this time of year they don't taste the same when already shelled.
Its a pity the bargains are not available under different circumstances.
Re: Sidmouth Shopping Centre to close at end of January 2010?
Yes its a shame that the sale bargains are under such sad circumstances, I feel so sorry for the traders, Christmas should be their most lucrative time and instead they are probably just worrying about what they will do next
I've heard, from more than one source, that we may be getting a 'Wilkinsons' where the indoor shopping centre is.
....... and whats happening at the old 'Sidmouth Florists' in Church Street - there has been some 'comfy' furniture delivered there - someone has told me it may be a massage parlour.
Does anyone know where all the shops from the market are going yet? - if the cheese man is moving to "driftwood" and the health food shop is going to where Clarks is at the moment - where are people like the engraver, pet shop, and card shop going? what's happening to the market once it is empty or will it just stay an empty building?
I believe those two businesses are the only ones, so far, that have confirmed their new locations. I think the health food shop is finalising a new location but has not indicated where, as yet. The engraver looks as though he'll be working from home but is also actively looking for new premises. The clothes shop, just inside the main entrance, has closed their stall now and I don't think they'll be looking for anywhere new in Sidmouth - they still have another outlet in Exmouth.
A point worth noting is that the Threshers old shop has been 'let' - so I wonder who is going into those premises.
As far as the empty market is concerned - maybe they could serve coffee to those 'yummy mummies' who could let their children run riot in there instead of causing havoc in local cafes.
