I'm glad I found this forum because I saw something weird in the sky last night over Exmouth. As it was New Year's Eve, my initial thought was that it was a firework or something like that, I looked out of my window at about 11pm-ish, and I saw a bright orange light that was way too big to be a star. I could straight away rule out the possibility that it was a firework, so I thought maybe it was a distress flare. But this light was travelling in a southerly direction towards Torbay. 2 tiny specs of light appeared to 'drop off' the main light. I watched it for about 30 seconds until it disappeared into the distance. My only other explanation for it is that it could have been some space debris burning up in the atmosphere, but that doesn't explain the two tiny lights dropping off and heading straight down towards the Earth. Did anyone else see it?
Has no one ever seen chinese lanterns being lit and launched ? I live in Exmouth and have seen various lanterns flying from the common out to sea and have also seen them floating across from Haldon Woods drifting out to sea. Once the lanterns are lit they can reace heights up to a mile high and the winds at that height can blow them along very fast. Hope this clears up the ufo theory, the lanterns are poor mans fireworks and easily available to the public
I saw a large orange light rise from Sandy Bay. I fully expected it to be a flare but it continued to rise and travel across the sky easterly. The clouds glowed orange from its light, as it travelled it got smaller. It gained greater height and then went out of view as a small orange dot when it went behind a dark high cloud. There was no sound that I could hear emminating from it.
I was stopped by a women in a car who asked me what i thought it was.
Im afraid I had no explanation except it did appear to come from an area that Marines train in and other similar sightings seem to occur near or around military /naval/ air bases and training gounds.
My sighting was on Sunday night the 24th January 2010 at 18.55 viewed from Budleigh Salterton, East Devon. It was dark with light cloud cover and some high dark rain clouds.
Hope many others also saw it and are brave enough to say they have done so.
there ARE lanterns around at the moment yes but some sighting are clearly NOT laterns!
a couple of months ago i saw four orange lights moving slowly across the sky, i knew these wern't laterns because the space between each were exactly the same, the wern;t flashing or flickering, and lanterns wouldn't be at the same height!
i have seen these a few times now and every time they go the same direction and always the same gap between each!
Ref: Kirstyy,s comment stating that the lights she saw wasnt lanterns. I agree, the orange light i saw was constant, didnt vary and when it passed white clouds they glowed orange from the reflected light. Even jet lights dont do that as they pass through clouds. It would have to be a very powerfull Chinese lantern to be able to do it.
After i had my sighting i checked on the net and the same description of an orange light or lights seem to be all over the South West and all stating no sound with the lights I dont know what the cause is but they are certainly not a usual sky event. They appear to be occuring over a prolonged period of time. It may be that it can be simply explained by secret military test firings.
It would be good if the press would maybe start taking an interest and try to find out but i guess this type of story is old hat and simply written off as a load of old cranks.
